Similar/contradictory questions on the Wonderlic test.

Similar/contradictory questions on the Wonderlic test are very common and a frequently filled with traps. Here was the first question from the free Wonderlic practice test:

u

1. The words ADOPT and ADAPT have _?_ meanings.

A. similar

B. contradictory

C. unrelated

Answer: C.

The words in problem one are not related, even though they start with the same letters and are spelled similarly.

ADOPT: take up or start to use or follow (an idea, method, or course of action); legally take another’s child and bring it up as one’s own.

ADAPT: become adjusted to new conditions.

Expect this to be the case on some of the Wonderlic questions you will see on your exam.

This is just one of many traps the Wonderlic will set to try to trick you into answering incorrectly.

 16. __?__ is to FIRE as EXACERBATE is to ARGUMENT.

A. WATER

B. FUEL

C. BLANKET

D. FIGHT

E. EXTINGUISH

Analogies on the Wonderlic test.

Analogies tend to scare test takers. We encourage you to not fear these problems on the Wonderlic.

Even if you have always hated analogies, or if you have never seen one until now, we have an approach that helps demystify how to answer these questions.

Turn analogies into relationship sentences.

Completing an analogy is all about establishing a relationship with the completed group of words and then finding the word that copies that relationship in the other group.

u

 16. __?__ is to FIRE as EXACERBATE is to ARGUMENT.

A. WATER

B. FUEL

C. BLANKET

D. FIGHT

E. EXTINGUISH

1. Create a sentence that describes the relationship of the two completed words.

We have EXACERBATE and ARGUMENT. A sentence that describes the relationship of these two words would be “To EXACERBATE an ARGUMENT is to make the ARGUMENT worse.”

2. Apply the same relationship sentence to the second group.

If we apply that same sentence to the other group we get “To [BLANK] a FIRE to make the FIRE worse. The word that best completes that sentence is FUEL.

13. The words PERCEIVE and DISCERN have __?__ meanings.

A. similar

B. contradictory

C. unrelated

Similar/contradictory words meanings on the Wonderlic test.

The Wonderlic will give you two words with no context and ask you whether the two words are similar (the same), contradictory (the opposite) or unrelated (the two words mean neither the same nor the opposite).

Your job is to simply decide how the two words are related.

If you do not know what a word means, solve by associating the word with a familiar context.

In many cases, you might not be able to actually define each word given, but you have heard the words used before.

Try to think about a time you heard the word used in the past.

PERCEIVE: I know that I have heard the word PERCEIVE before. A sentence that sounds correct to me or that I remember hearing is “he could not perceive the small item with the naked eye”. I assume that PERCEIVE means “to see” – especially in a careful, scrutinizing manner.

DISCERN: I have heard people use the word DISCERN when talking about being able to identify a slight difference in two things. A sentence that would make sense is “I could not discern any difference between the twins”.

I now can assume that these words are similar since they both are about being able to see or identify small details.

ANSWER: A.

 9. PHOTOGRAPH is to BLURRY as KNIFE is to ___?___.

A. SHARP

B. PAIN

C. CUT

D. DULL

E. STEEL

Analogies on the Wonderlic test.

Analogies tend to scare test takers. We encourage you to not fear these problems on the Wonderlic.

 9. PHOTOGRAPH is to BLURRY as KNIFE is to ___?___.

A. SHARP

B. PAIN

C. CUT

D. DULL

E. STEEL

1. Create a sentence that describes the relationship of the two completed words.

We have PHOTOGRAPH and BLURRY. A sentence that describes the relationship of these two words would be “A poor quality PHOTOGRAPH is BLURRY”.

2. Apply the same relationship sentence to the second group.

If we apply that same sentence to the second word group we get “A poor quality photograph is [BLANK]. The word that best completes that sentence is DULL.

NOTE: Watch out for traps! SHARP and CUT sound like good answer choices because they can be easily associated with KNIFE. However, analogies are all about relationship sentences, so don’t fall for these traps.

It’s a trap!

SHARP and CUT sound like good answer choices, but remember: analogies are all about relationship sentences.

Another Wonderlic test example question.

Relationship sentence:

A MOUSE gets chased by a CAT.

A [BLANK] gets chased by POLICE.

The word that best completes our relationship sentence is CRIMINAL.
