Finding exact duplicates on the Wonderlic Test.

Questions on the Wonderlic that ask you to identify how many pairs of numbers (or words) are exact duplicates are testing your ability to pay attention to even the minutest of details.

Two elements make these problems tricky:

1. You are usually rushing due to the extreme time constraints of the test.

2. It’s difficult to remember how many of the previous pairs were duplicates and how many were not. Trying to remember how many duplicates you’ve seen while also scrutinizing new pairs of numbers is a tall task.

How to make these questions easier.

The easiest way to systematically go through this problem type is to take your scrap paper and pencil and make a small tic-mark every time you see a duplicate.

Start from the top of the list and work your way down. If a pair is a duplicate, make a mark on your scrap paper.

If it is not a duplicate, move on to the next pair without making a mark.

Once you are through all five pairs, count the number of marks on your scrap paper – that is your answer.

Let’s walk through Question 29 together.

A. 1

B. 2

C. 3

D. 4

E. 5

1. Go through each pair, starting from the top, and mark the ones that are duplicates.

If you are taking your exam on a computer, make marks on a piece of scrap paper for each duplicate you see as you work from top to bottom.

As I go through the pairs above, I mark each duplicate I see.

The second and third pairs were the only duplicates so 2 is my answer.

Since I went through and made a mark whenever I came across a duplicate, I can calmly and accurately determine how many duplicates there were in the problem and confidently give my answer.

Answer: B.

Duplicate questions on the Wonderlic Test become easier when you use scrap paper.

Make a mark every time you see a duplicate.

Now You Try!

Let’s try another one using the strategy outlined above. This time we will use names instead of numbers, which is another common type of duplicate problem on the Wonderlic. You’ve got this! 😉
